General Definition of Work
The City of Jacksonville is looking for a Fitness instructor to lead, instruct, and motivate individuals or groups in exercise activities, including cardiovascular exercises (exercises for the heart and blood circulation), strength training, and stretching to work with people of all ages and skill levels.
The Fitness Instructor performs intermediate technical, professional and responsible work in conducting a variety of specialized fitness classes in a variety of settings and facilities; does related work as required.
Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Fitness Coordinator.
Applicant may be requested to audition.
SCHEDULE: Availability to teach 6 classes 3 days a week.
May need to be available to serve and substitute for other instructors classes when needed.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
Planning, scheduling, and conducting fitness classes and activities preparing records and files.

Teaches group classes and conducts one on one sessions to improve strength, cardio, and general fitness.
Assists fitness coordinator w/ developing, planning, promoting, and implementing a variety of fitness programs.
Teaches fitness classes for a variety of age groups ranging from young adults to senior citizens.
Assists participants in to create and track fitness progress and goals.
Assist in maintain class and equipment records as required by the Recreation Department.
Assists in maintenance of fitness equipment and inventory.
Operates and instructs customers in proper operation of fitness equipment, such as weight machines, benches, free weights, and fitness assessment devices.
Assists with fitness/community health initiatives for citizens of all ages.
Performs related tasks as required.
Required Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college or university with major course work in Kinesiology, Human Performance, Exercise Science and Physical Therapy, Recreation or related field and 6 months experience in supervising organized recreational activities.
Special Requirements:
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Possession of CPR and basic first aid certifications.
Group Exercise Certification required (1 year).
Personal Trainer Certification preferred.
One or more of the following national certifications preferred:
AFAA (Aerobics & Fitness Association of America),
ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine),
NASM (National Academy for Sports Medicine),
NSCA (National Strength & Conditioning Associations),
ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association), Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the principles, rules, materials and equipment requirements of a variety of recreation and fitness activities; general knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation, psychology, sociology, and of personal health and hygiene; general knowledge of first aid practices and techniques; ability to give routine instructions; ability to adhere to program standards and objectives outlined by superiors, and to lead and instruct groups in games, sports and other recreational activities; ability to resolve disputes with firmness and impartiality; ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public.
