JOB TITLE: COLOR GUARD INSTRUCTOR GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A part time position as an assistant to the high school band director, the color guard instructor coordinates the preparations, exercises, & activities of the school marching band’s auxiliary unit, the color guard (Flags).
The instructor prepares and directs the unit for performances integrated within the larger marching band unit.
SPECIFIC DUTIES: The Color Guard Instructor will… design color guard programs that effectively complement & enhance the visual and musical program.
evaluate members' abilities and designs equipment carriage accordingly.
work closely with the H.
S.
Band Director & the other staff members to develop a visual program, including flag, uniform, & prop design.
attend all rehearsals and performances instruct members in fundamental and advanced dance, flag, and weapon techniques.
• teach members program material as a part of the marching band (Field Show, Parade Routine) coordinate the color guard rehearsal schedule with the full Marching Band.
create rehearsal plans in cooperation with H.
S.
Band Director.
schedule and conduct extra rehearsals for the unit, in addition to the scheduled marching band rehearsals as needed.
ensure the highest possible level of performance from the color guard members thorough a proper warm-up process, effective preparation, and attention to individual members.
recruit potential color guard members while retaining current members.
ensure that the color guard is properly equipped for rehearsals and performances to include the suggestion of a uniform to be worn for performances, and facilitate the measuring of each member and putting together an order.
maintain a cooperative working relationship with the H.
S.
band director, all band staff, band members, school administration, booster organization, school staff, and parents.
manage all equipment necessary for rehearsals & performances including maintenance, repair, & acquisition recommendations.
participate in spring semester program planning with band staff as needed.
• recommend new property purchases within the budget allocations.
establish communication with parents of color guard students & organize their efforts in support of the unit.
other related duties, as assigned, to assist the H.
S.
Band Director prepare students for competitions and public appearances, including parades and reviews.
QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma Level 2 Volunteer Status w/ Brunswick County Schools, including background check and on boarding as a new hire for Brunswick County Schools.
Background in marching band auxiliary performance required.
Experience in the various sub groups of the guard unit (e.
g.
flags, rifles, sabres, dance, etc.
) required.
Experience in composing and choreographing routines for the various color guard units required.
Experience working with school-aged students required; preferably at high school level.
Background in performing with a drum corps, university marching, or military organization preferred.
Background in instruction/adjudication of a drum corps or marching organization preferred.
Must be available for Band Camp dates as scheduled during the summer months.
Must attend all rehearsals and performances as scheduled by the H.
S.
Band Director COMPENSATION: BCS Stipend labeled for “Color Guard Director” in addition to competitive compensation offered by band boosters.
